Ethics of Protection Magic

Most paths acknowledge the need for spiritual and physical protection spells. Remember your path’s ethics system when considering what type of protection magic/energy work you do. For example, most paths say that returning someone’s negative energy back to them is an acceptable form of energy work, but some paths say that their followers must wait for the universe to act. Other paths may allow their members to have a curse in wait for negative energy sent from the individual sending negative energy.

It is also important to not ignore “mundane” security measures. Lock your door, use security cameras, and carry pepper spray as needed. Your body is the vessel for you soul/energy, so guard it in all ways you can.

Types of Protection Magic

• Warding works by repelling negative energies. Works like a shield. May include returning that negativity to the sender.

• Exorcism removes negativity/entities already present. This is typically the first step in protection magic, so that you start with a clean slate.

• Guardian is typically an object that is programed for a specific task (Door Guardians, Spell Bottles, Auras, etc)

• General Protection is used to provide protection from a wide range of issues. The first line of defense but may not be as effective for specific issues.

Spells/Wards

Crystal Point Spell (Ward)

Items Needed:

• White Candle

• Five Crystal Points

• A bag or thread to contain the points

On the night of a Full Moon (Amplified energy) or New Moon (Good night to create new spells because the moon grows in power), light a white candle and set your crystals that are tied up or in the bag, exposed to the night sky. This is to empower them with the moon’s energy. The next night, find the four cardinal directions and bury the quarts points with the points pointing towards from your home. When I put mine in, I also buried Lavendar, Sage, and Basil, but the blend can be customized. The fifth point stays in your house and can be used to strengthen your wards.

Mirror Spell (Ward with Return to Sender)

Items Needed:

• At least one Mirror

This can be done at any time, but I tend to use it during the daytime hours (to shine light on what is being done/said). Take a mirror (I also used a windchime with mirrors) and draw protective symbols on the back (Elowh, House or Heart with a Circle around it). Next take the mirror and point it out the window. This spell works to reflect the negative energy being inflicted back to the source. The mirror can be cleansed under a full moon as needed. 

Door Guardian (Ward/Guardian)

Items Needed:

• Pick a candle based on the job given: White (All Purpose), Brown (Home), Green (Wealth/Home), Orange/Pink (Happiness), Black (Protection/Grounding), Pink/Red (Love, Friendship), Blue (Health and “Evil Eye”)

• Item that will serve as the guardian

After you have selected your item, you need to give it a job. Light the candle that corresponds with the job and face the object near the door. The more you think about or interact with the item, the more effective it is. I talk to my dragon door guardian and try to provide him with offerings.

Black Candle Spell (Exorcism/General Protection)

Items Needed:

• A bowl of salt

• Black Candle

This is my go-to spell to remove energy build up and negative energy in my house. It is not the same as “saging” a house, because it is not as effective at entity removal, but it reduces the energy that attracts them and can reduce influence. This used to create a blank slate and can be followed up with a spell to increase a different type of energy in the house.

Take a bowl of salt and put the black candle in the center. As the energy is drawn to the candle, it is purified by the salt. The chant I use is: 

“Remove all negativity from this house, Keep it away, and Keep it out!” (x3).” 

But you may find one that works better for you.
